Office of Emergency Management – Suspicious Packages

Download the NoticePlease report any suspicious packages that you may come across at your home,
public spaces, educational institutions,
or businesses to 9-1-1.

Suspicious packages can come in many shapes and sizes but be on the lookout for the possible
signs:

  • Lopsided or uneven packaging -Rigid or bulky packaging
  • No or strange return address
    information
  • Packages that are missing or incorrect
    addresses or incorrect names
  • Protruding wires
  • Strange Odors
  • Oily stains, discolorations or crystallization on wrapper
  • Excessive tape or string
  • Sounds
  • Boxes, luggage, backpacks, containers
  • Parcels may be unprofessionally wrapped with several combinations of tape or string used to secure the package, and may be endorsed “Fragile—Handle With Care” or “Rush—Do Not Delay.”

Situations that may be cause for concern and warrant a call to 9-1-1:

  • Packages or baggage left at the front door when you aren’t expecting any
  • Packages or baggage left on sidewalks, running trails, parking garages or public spaces

What should you do if you come across a suspicious package:

  • Call 9-1-1 immediately
  • Do not handle the package
  • Keep people and pets away from the package and look for possible indicators
  • Do not open, smell or taste anything if you have touched the package wash your
    hands immediately with soap and water.

Do not use cellphones, pagers, radios or any other devices that rely on wireless
communications while near the suspicious package.
